GGSK College finishes runners up in the London cup

Our young GGSK College cricket team had a successful tournament this year, reaching the finals day. Finals day is where the top 4 teams in the competition compete against each other to be crowned London champions.  The finals line up consisted of GGSK College, Ilford County High School,  Alleyn’s and Ernest Bevin School.

GGSK were drawn against Ernest Bevin in the semi -finals.  Like GGSK, Ernest Bevin has been unbeaten throughout the competition, so this would be GGSK’s toughest match so far. GGSK won the coin toss and opted to bowl first.

We bowled well and fielded very well. Special mention goes to Rajan who stopped several boundaries and showed a great arm in getting the ball back to the wickets quickly stopping the batsman from making more runs. At the end of the first innings, GGSK held Ernest Bevin to 99-7. The chase was on!!

Sai and Vrisin opened up for GGSK and they both got into a good rhythm early in the innings. Both run the singles as they drove shots past the nearest fielders. A misunderstanding with communication between Sai and Vrisin lead to GGSK losing their first wicket. Sai run out of his crease not realising the fielder had stopped a driven shot by Vrisn close to the stumps which subsequently ended in him getting run out. An early blow for our GGSK team. Sai Made 4 singles.

In stepped Niranjan.

Vrisn and Niranjan both got to grips with the bowlers, scoring consistently with singles. Both run really well between the stumps. However ever it was Niranjan that was next to lose his wicket after being bowled out.  Niranjan made 5 singles and 1 boundary for 4 taking his tally to 9.

In stepped Keerthan.

As the runs started to build up, GGSK were on course to reach the target. Keerthan and Vrisin began to be strike the ball aggressively, making several boundaries for four. The partnership was proving vital as the momentum was very strong in GGSK’s favour. With 7 runs left to win with 2 overs to be played disaster nearly struck. Keerthan was run out. He made 4 singles 2 boundaries for four, taking his tally to 9.

In stepped Yusuf who unfortunately lost his wicket from the first ball. In stepped Jeet. With 4 runs to win, our captain lost his wicket by being bowled. A massive blow as we were so close to reaching the target. Vrisn made 22 singles, 1 double and 4 boundaries for four, taking his tally to 40. In stepped Rajan. With the last over coming GGSK needed 1 run from 6 balls and it was Rajan that got the vital run, taking our total to 100. It was a very close and intense finish to the match. This was a great experience for our team as they continue to learn and develop. Win for GGSK- ONTO THE FINALS
