TEACHING METHODS

Our staff use the most up-to-date learning strategies which are adapted to suit the students’ needs and vary in style depending on the task that needs to be taught.  Interactive boards with CD-roms and Internet access keep the students interested in lessons that are also blended with traditional teaching methods to ensure successful learning.

It is essential for us to stress that individual needs are catered for as much as possible as each member of staff recognises the individuality of each student.  Small class sizes give us this advantage in offering as much support to our students as possible - a promise we aim to uphold and which distinguishes G.G.S.K.C. from other educational establishments.

HOMEWORK

All children are expected to share their reading at home, particularly in the early stages of learning to read.  As children progress through the school, they will be bringing home tables and spelling to learn.  Older children will be given tasks to complete in order to reinforce their learning and prepare them for their future career choices.
By the time the child reaches his/her GCSE courses, at least three hours of homework will be given and this timetable should be strictly followed if the pupil is to pass 10 – 15 GCSEs as is expected by Year 11.
We ask for parental co-operation in assuring that the child has a quiet, relaxed atmosphere in which to work.

ASSESSMENTS

The school assesses its students with internal exams every THREE WEEKS to ensure that everything the teacher has taught has been learned.  Mock exams are also set every half-term to make sure the students are well acquainted with the examination system. The school also sets the National SATS exams to see how the children are performing on a National Level at Key Stages 1, 2 and 3.

SPECIAL NEEDS
The College, being a non-selective school, helps those children with Special Needs as we employ properly qualified teachers to deal with their individual needs.

Extra tuition is offered outside the timetable and during holiday times for anyone interested, including our most gifted students.

Separate classes are offered to help those falling behind the required level by the National Curriculum and the standards of the College.  However, we try not to disrupt the child’s normal timetable as much as possible to avoid social exclusion.

Any child may have Special Educational Needs in one or more areas of the curriculum.  These special educational needs may include:

  • Learning difficulties - when a child has significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of children of that age.
  • Physical and sensory disabilities - when a child has a disability which prevents or hinders effective use of educational facilities generally provided within LEA schools appropriate to children of that age.
  • Emotional and development problems - these may be long or short term.
  • More able or children with specific talents.

The school supports the principle of integration and seeks to communicate effectively with parents and other professionals in order to implement this.
