Nursery children playing in the activities area
Lots of activities to choose from

At GGSK Nursery, we acknowledge that the Early Years is the most essential time for an individual to get ready to face the challenges of Life. We provide a safe and sound environment for the smooth transition from home to school.

Our highly qualified staff are always ready to accept our toddlers from all social and cultural backgrounds and use the latest technology and research at their disposal to develop their early learning skills.

Physical development at our stage of the education process is all about improving coordination, control, manipulation skills and movement. We regularly use indoor and outdoor equipment and activities and select the language we use carefully, when inviting the children to move their bodies.(eg; prepositions, movement verbs) The children have lots of opportunities to practise balancing on our beams and other equipment in their private, enclosed play area.

To encourage the importance of physical development the Nursery's Sponsored Walk: "Toddle-Waddle" ( photo below) raised hundreds of pounds for Meningitis Charities. The children also learned about the importance of charity, all of them were proud of raising money for their first charity:

We place a major emphasis on encouraging individuals to speak to the group, and on listening to one another's verbal contributions. We introduce the children to the concept of "giving to others" who are less fortunate than themselves, through Harvest assemblies and these fundraising events for charity.

As part of their early reading experiences, we use 'phonic', 'look and say' and 'real books' as well as the 'shared reading experience'. We also use the widely acclaimed, multi-sensory approach to teaching all the sounds in our alphabet called 'Jolly Phonics'. Each session, the children are involved in a story and literacy time is a daily feature.

Three times a week , we provide a qualified drama and speech teacher who directs courses for the London Academy of Music and Dance course  in Creative Dance and Movement courses along with Poetry Recitals which concentrate on the children's speech and language to help identify any particular difficulties in a child's language development. This is just one of the "extras" GGSK Nursery offers its families.

Above is only a part of the ample playing area Nursery children have at heir disposal to work on their physical and social development at GGSK Nursery.

Children at GGSK Nursery develop practical skills for life, for example, polishing their shoes and pouring liquids, and learn how to become more independent in the school environment. We have focus days on traditions and special days from many countries and faiths e.g. Diwali, Guru Nanak, American Independence Day, St Patrick's day, Chinese New Year, Christmas, Harvest.

The children at GGSK Nursery are introduced to playing and working in groups of various sizes, and helped to develop a strong sense of self-esteem. We encourage them to help one another and to listen to each other, and there are times when 2½ to rising 5 year olds all play and work together. The adults in the environment are also expected to model positive relationships to the children.

Creativity in a child enables them to make connections between one learning area and another. This curriculum area includes art and craft obviously, but also activities such as percussion instruments, moving to music or spoken language, drama and of course offering time for the children to become engaged in imaginary play, with or without props.

Specific Montessori apparatus helps teach numbers and basic concepts such as size, shape and colour. Maths is all around us and we take every opportunity to help the children use and understand mathematical concepts. For example, days of the week or giving out one sharpened pencil to each child at the table.

The sessions usually run over the lunch time period. It is a very beneficial experience for young children to learn to sit at tables and eat their lunch together whilst enjoying a social time with familiar teachers and peers.

Our programmes are always innovative and exciting.

Each session will offer something different - usually with a theme, which may be associated with the time of year or possibly a new film, or book that the children are all very excited about. Each session will be geared up to provide different activities. For example:

  • Cookery - exciting savoury and sweet recipes
  • At GGSK Nursery we also offer the students a healthy breakfast in the morning of fresh fruit and/or milk with cereal which is also available throughout the day.  This adds to the homely atmosphere we create for our pupils.

  • Art - creating original works of art - Painting, drawing, modelling and many more forms of art are explored. We teach art in the normal classrooms and also reserve the Secondary's Art Department to use their ample, wonderful resources and the children can see and be inspired by the older children's works of art!
  • Above shows the GGSK Art Department - a facility available to Nursery
  • Drama - children devise their own plays and experience being 'on stage' We have a qualified Drama teacher who also runs an evening and weekend Drama Club as well as our part-time qualified drama and speech teacher who directs courses for the London Academy of Music and Dance course  in Creative Dance and Movement courses along with Poetry Recitals which concentrate on the children's speech and language to help identify any particular difficulties in a child's language development.
  • Music - making and using musical instruments and experiencing a range of music styles from around the world. We have a part-time music teacher who teaches the children traditional musical insruments which are then played by the children in morning assemblies and cultural events and school shows.
  • Dance - discovering dances from around the world and learning to move to music. Traditional and modern musical styles are explored.
  • Physical activities - the children use all sorts of exciting equipment and, weather permitting, are able to enjoy water and sand play in our enclosed, garden play area.
